Domestic Violence and Children

Our Team at the Tree House CAC also sees children who have witnessed any kind of criminal violence (domestic violence, violent crimes, etc.)

Children who are exposed to high levels of ongoing violence, such as domestic violence within their home, are likely to experience the following:

  • Higher levels of aggression
  • Oppositional behavior
  • Disobedience
  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Withdrawal
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lower cognitive functioning
  • Poor school performance
  • Lack of conflict resolution skills
  • Increased tolerance for use of violence
1 in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
